What can you use the app for?

22tracks gives internet listeners a way to discover new music and enjoy their favorite genres quickly and painlessly. The website features playlists that consist of 22 songs. Each playlist is chosen by specialized Amsterdam-based DJs so they encompass a good representation of the genre. The tracks also include music by new artists. The user can select a genre, which includes beats, contemporary, dance hall, disco, drums and bass, dubstep, electro, funk and jazz, hip hop, house music, Latin, metal, originals, pop music, R and B, reggae, relaxation music, rock, soul, techno and world groove. As soon as the user selects a genre, 22tracks loads the playlist and begins. The user can see the artist, song title and album name. 22tracks provides basic audio controls, including pause, play, reverse, forward and volume. A small profile beside the playlist shares information about the DJ who created it.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

22tracks is an online jukebox application that was founded in September of 2009 by Vincent Reinders and Gilles de Smit. The company is based out of Amsterdam, which is also where the DJs who created each playlist are located. The application was intended to give users a no-hassle way to listen to and discover music on the web.

What are the differences to other apps?

22tracks offers users a unique listening opportunity. Although the user cannot choose the songs played, they can discover new music and try out genres they might have never heard before. 22tracks can also help the new artists featured within its playlists gain notoriety and grow their fan-base.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

22tracks has a very trendy appearance that remains simple and organized. The white logo is featured at the top along with white text for the genre links and audio player. The dark background surrounds a list of the current playlist’s songs, which includes each song’s name, artist and album. The upper, right hand corner includes a small bio and image of the DJ who created that list. As the user clicks through each genre, the background color changes to enhance the atmosphere of that type of music.

How does the registration process work?

22tracks was created to make listening to new music as simple as possible. Keeping in line with that sentiment, the creators of 22tracks provide access to anyone who arrives at the website. There is no log in required and currently no way to create an account. Users can ‘like’ 22tracks on Facebook (which naturally requires a Facebook account), but this is optional and does not require a log in for the website.

What does it cost to use the application?

It is difficult to charge a fee for a service that requires no log in. Staying in line with the website’s goal of being an easy no hassle way to enjoy music, users are not charged a fee. The user can return as often as they like to enjoy the 22tracks found in each genre’s playlist.

Who would you recommend the application to?

22tracks is a great audio resource for anyone who is interested in exploring new music. The genre selection is diverse, although somewhat limited. Of course each playlist consists of a total of 22tracks, so eventually the user will listen to them all. However there are a number of genre options that should keep the user busy for a while.

  • Select a playlist from a number of genres
  • Choose to ‘like’ 22tracks on Facebook
  • Listen to music without logging in
  • Learn about the DJ who put the playlist together
  • Discover a song’s title, who created it and the album it came from
